CENTRAL FIRE STATION IN OSLO

BRINGING NEW REALITY

CENTRAL FIRE STATION IN OSLO
Type: exterior & interior | Location: Oslo, Norway | Status: completedCompletion time: 10 days

Client: KOHT Arkitekter
Visualisation: CUUB Studio

103 proposals were submitted for the open design competition for a new urban fire station in Oslo, Norway. We were glad to create visual communication for the KOHT Arkitekter's project.

The overall competition brief was to design a modern fire station in Oslo city centre – at Bjørvika in close proximity to the Oslo Opera and overlooking the Oslo Fjord. A central part of the project was to show that fire station can be somewhat accessible to the public. The atmosphere of the images should have been inviting and warm with nordic light and with a fine balance of the subtle palette. Architects sent us informative brief where they revealed all details.

Atmosphere for both images: The atmosphere of the images should have been inviting and warm with nordic light and with a fine balance of the subtle palette. Architects weren’t looking for the perfect day with saturated blue skies. A fine balance of the Nordic palette with subtle tone options.

EXTERIOR RENDER

Site: The fire station is located in the sentrum borough of Oslo – in the harbour district of Bjørvika by the Oslo Fjord and in close proximity to the Oslo Opera. The site chosen for the project is an unbuilt lot that has been used partially in recent years. Surrounding the site are several iconic buildings - both new and old.

Context: A central part of the project was to show that the fire station can be somewhat accessible to the public. The building's design is a good match to the area's current mix of major Norwegian cultural institutions and architecture.
INTERIOR RENDER

Quite an interesting view with the Opera in the background. It shows the room in a really nice way with the large wooden trusses, as well as the beautiful light and openness towards the street. It was important to have a child and a parent or something in the window looking in.

Material palette: The material palette for the interior features CLT (cross-laminated timber) elements in spruce for walls and ceiling. The large trusses are glulam beams of spruce. Windows frames and gates towards outside are in colored steel, while the windows from the gallery and normal doors will be in stainless steel finish. Floor is in subtle polished concrete without too much reflection.

Objects and details: Client wanted the quiet simple view with subtle details that tell a story. Air compressor and a cable hanging down, tool box cart, canvas colored fire hose and one or two persons inside, while having someone looking in from the street (a child and father/mother). Could be interesting to test with a fire truck right outside or halfway through a gate.
