Celes Magazine
Celes Magazine focuses on female singers and musicians targeted towards Millennials who are interested in non-contemporary music. The name Celes derives from the phrase “Music of the Spheres”, or the harmonic movement of the celestial bodies in our universe. It evokes a music style that is characterized by airy vocals, ethereal harmonies and celestial tones.
Research into the layout and design led to spacious and light typography. The treatment symbolizes the artist’s quiet yet immense presence while performing.
I'd grown up listening and learning from these artists and to showcase their work in print is a personal connection I wanted to make with readers. I want people to ask, "Who are they? What did they sound like? What was their importance?" Artist's like Siouxsie Sioux, Nico and Kate Bush are highly praised but mainstream success eluded them. They provided inspiration for many of the artists featured in Celes and I'm proud that the magazine can be a home for their stories.
Throughout the process, storytelling was the top priority. How could layout convey a message that was already a piece of copy? How could the shape combined with images and colour tell a bigger story? It was challenging and rewarding putting the pieces of this editorial puzzle in place.
Celes is the story of how my childhood heroines shaped my views on life, music and art. I hope people find as much inspiration from the works of those who came before as much as I did.
