KWATAKYE ATIKO

Inspired by the West African Adinkra symbol - Kwatakye Atiko.  This symbol is said to be a special hair style of Kwatakye, a war captain of old Asante.  The symbol has come to represent bravery and fearlessness. It is also given as an earned title to any brave son of an Akan community.  Being unapologetic, having a sense of self and owning who you are, especially when that becomes life threatening requires an enormous amount of courage and bravery.  This illustration serves to honour and celebrate those that are owning who they are despite the dangers that may accompany that and deserve the title of “brave person” the same way the West African community of Akan did with their warrior Kwatakye.  The Adinkra symbol for “bravery” aims to encourage a sense of owning your identity to matter what.
