Artful Reduction of an Iconic Landmark

Background

In this project for Intro to Graphic Design 1, the goal was to make an artful reduction of an iconic landmark and turn it into a 12 by 18in vertical poster. I was restricted to the program Adobe Illustrator, and had to include the name and location of the landmark in my final product.

Process

I wanted to challenge myself to make my design as minimalistic as I could, while remaining clearly recognizable for the landmark it is.

I brainstormed many monuments: from London Bridge, to the Taj Mahal, and I finally arrived on the idea of the Sydney Opera house. When reducing an iconic landmark, you have to boil the landmark down to its defining feature(s). For the Sydney Opera House, this was the pointed arches.

Originally, I included more of the building itsels in flat shapes, but soon realized that everything besides the inverted V shapes were unnecessary to achieve my goal. In the end, I decided to use 2 shades of blue as my color scheme, to represent the water and sky that surrounds the Opera House.
