Arouset El Moulid | عروسة المولد

'Arouset El Moulid  // عروسة المولد

Every year, in the week leading up to Al Mawlid Al Nabawi (the birth of the prophet), a particular phenomenon appears on the streets of Cairo; vibrant tents selling ‘Arouset El Moulid.’

This project investigates the sugar version of the Moulid doll. Despite being an Egyptian tradition that has lasted for centuries, it is not immediately noticeable due the dominance of its plastic counterparts. In this project, I explore and document how this tradition exists in our culture today, shedding light on this piece of folklore that a lot of people are unaware of despite its prevalence. I especially focus on its production processes as well as how and where it is sold, and present my findings in book format.
