2020 - TotClok | Mobile App Concept

As part of a Capstone Project for an online Coursera Course titled UI / UX Design Specialisation offered by California Institute of the Arts, this mobile application was ideated, planned, designed and prototyped from scratch, with each step of the process vetted by peer reviewers.

Making children do things has always been a tough job for parents. To add fuel to the fire, nowadays, Internet has become the primary source for all things from education to entertainment.

While it is a boon to have access to content from all over the world, too much of a boon can be a bane. To avoid spawning an entire generation of couch potatoes, we must encourage an equitable balance between our children's online and offline lives.

While the use of App Locks can deter children from overusing internet, They can easily be bypassed by children in the absence of parental supervision. Furthermore, studies have shown that, too much control- especially ones that are explicitly visible- can be counterproductive in encouraging the necessary results.

This app wishes to encourage children to work through incentives they can earn things such as screen-time, shopping-time etc. Children can also have a Wishlist where they can request any gifts they would love to have.

Parents have the authority to design and assign rewards, design and approve gift requests. This enables the parents to be aware of their child's deeds and needs at every step of their way.

Unlike other similar Apps which gamify by rewarding points to upgrade fantasy avatars which do not translate into the real world, the rewards in this case is very much tangible. Moreover, the levelling system is replaced with Roles. This ensures that there is no upper limit for experience and offers an avenue for long-term satisfaction.

Observing successful existing applications, I decided to incorporate certain features such as power-ups / passes as random treasure chests. For instance, a one-time power-up skip task (though counter intuitive, if is of a sufficiently high cost, its value will be equivalent to completing several difficult tasks)

This is a mobile application is tailored to parents seeking to distance their children from habits of procrastination while giving the children incentives to work towards achieving it.

In short, the initial target users would be:

Children (accommodating those with low attention span too)
Parents (usually around the ages of 30-40)

To facilitate the usage of application for this target group, the following design goals are necessary to be achieved:

1. Simple interface that focuses on one-thing-at-a-time
2. Less flashy, less distracting yet positive colour scheme
3. Follows Two Tap Rule - every element is reachable within a couple of clicks
4. Intuitive Interactions with elements of surprise to keep children entertained

An externally affiliated user would be teachers — with whom the data collected on the student would be shared with, to facilitate continuous assessment, though they are not the primary target.
