A former colleague of mine, Andrew Choi reached out to me for StarTalk's additional branding elements, He's one of our best Creative Directors in Futurism. He showed me a great mood board on Pinterest to work with the inspiration. A Retro-futuristic Space Race theme to be played around with a touch of vector images. I took the challenge since we are comfortable working with each other and I like the design idea & concept. The logo was created by another former colleague of mine Errol Tiozon who is also a talented designer.
Here are some of the main inspiration behind the concept of the Social Media assets. Elements such as: Lines, Faded shadows, Retro-Futurism, Space, Sci-fi, Texture and Colors. We came out with the blue and red contrast Nebula. I also intended the logo to be partly hidden behind the nebula to amplify the essence of "curiousity" or an approach that the show would like to reveal or introduce new knowledge to the viewers and listeners kind of feeling to it. Also the Astronaut don't just represent science or scientist, it also imply the concept of "discovery".
When it comes to the different social media banners, I made it sure that in every platform the mid logo and astronaut is visible. The most tricky one is the YouTube Channel Art. because you need to consider the TV artwork and at the same time, the web channel art only shows 20-30% of the Artwork.
After doing the social media assets, We need to create an artwork for the Podcast cover. So we used the artwork as background and moved with Neil deGrasse Tyson's profile. I started to vectorize Neil's photo in black in white. Blacks would be shadows with 20-30% Opacity, each new layer adds darker opacity thus creating a Shadow and Highlight progression. Another tricky part is the curly white hair of Neil. I rarely do vectors but I found a way to make it more semi-realistic but would still have the effect of vector.
