Who Is Shirley? Stickers - Life's Library

Life's Library is a fully-online, subscription-membership book club for thoughtful readers with an authentic enthusiasm for literature. About once a month, a new book is sent out to subscribers and all of them gather together online to discuss it with all the other engaged readers. All subscription proceeds go to Partners in Health, a charity dedicated to improving the health conditions of poor and developing nations across the world.

As a part of that, subscribers are able to get various perks each month, ranging from custom book plates, special book themed podcasts featuring various internet personalities, and more. For the month of July, I was requested to make a complementary sticker.

John Green, author of titles such as Turtles All the Way Down and The Fault in Our Stars, hosts a semi-regular live stream for Life's Library subscribers in which he talks about books, the work being done with Partner's in Health, and answers various questions from the audience.

On June 7th 2019, John Green hosted a stream.

In this stream, a peculiar question was asked by a subscriber named Sarah. She explained to John that she had received a letter addressed to him and his office along with their perks for that month. John rubbed at his temples and said, "Oh, geez," and asked who the letter was from. Eventually, he learned that the letter was from Shirley.

John did not know who Shirley was.

The rest of the stream was dedicated to John racking his brain, trying to remember who possibly Shirley could be. Repeatedly, he asked himself, "Who is Shirley? Who could she be?" John recalled many individuals who may have been Shirley, but some of them were, in fact, various Shelley's he knew. Then suddenly, it came to him, and we all discovered that this Shirley was the Nice Book Publisher Shirley.

At the end of the stream, someone jokingly asked if Life's Library would be making any Shirley merchandise in upcoming perks. The event felt notable enough to me that I decided to codify it in some art while getting ready to work on other projects.

Several days later I was contacted by the DFTBA team to see if I would be interested in making my design into a sticker. I worked on polishing up the design I initially made, pulling in color variations from the Life's Library logo.

It's a small, silly project, but one I was very excited to be apart of. Being able to contribute to a community of enthusiastic people, as well as an organization helping developing nations get the necessities they need was pretty awesome!
