Behold, a marvel of repetition, so visually striking that it could only be called . . . TAPEHENGE. This work uses five plaster castings of the same humble tape dispenser, some actual tape to imply that these are in fact tape dispensers (albeit, stone ones), and a mold to pour the plaster into that's made solely out of silicone caulk and determination.
The trickiest part of this project was definitely making the actual mold. Between trying to keep the caulk from sticking to my hands, the actual feat of putting the caulk over the tape dispenser, waiting for it to dry, and extracting the tape dispenser from the mold, I really had my work cut (or rather, caulked) out for me.
It wasn't exactly making the mold, but creating the plaster castings were no cake walk either. I had a few problems getting the proper plaster to water ratio right, as well as getting the actual castings out of the mold without them chipping (note to self: cast something thicker than a tape dispenser next time). However, refusing to give up on the chipped castings, I decided to highlight their cragginess by painting them to look like stone. For me, that was when the project really started to come together.
After the plaster tape dispensers were fully cast, the only thing left to do was figure out how to make the disparate castings fit into one 3-D project. Thankfully, the answer was as simple as tape. With just a few tape strips, I was not only able to unite the castings into one work of art, but also prove that they were in fact supposed to be tape dispensers.
in my opinion, I think this was the most demanding project of my 3-D design class. Not only is that because of the inherent waiting involved with things that have to dry (like caulk and plaster), but also figuring out what to cast, how many of it you need for it to qualify as repetition, and how to unite all those castings. But I still managed to pull it off, and I got it onto here, so I consider that a job well done.
