LIBRO LIBRE
Cultural Project

LibroLibre is a collaborative initiative started by Duco lab. and Buró_Buró that started from our mutual interest in doing projects with social and cultural impact, using design as a tool to make positive changes in our society and urban life.

Project Goals:
◊ Promote reading books in an independent, accessible and free manner.
◊ Reinforce places and programs that are already helping promote reading.
◊ Making a nomadic space that contributes to the preservation and improvement of public space.
◊ Encourage the local community and activate the public space with participatory dynamics.

How does it work:
◊ We place an emergent installation in public spaces containing books and texts regarding different subjects of interest for that place and time, depending on the location it is set on.
◊ The selected books are carefully chosen and contain printed and audible texts.
◊ Each edition is accompanied by a program of activities such as performances, talks, reading out loud, workshops, artists
interventions, etc.
◊ All activities are held in the installation and reinforce the matter at hand, waking curiosity amongst pedestrians, that
can take part in them or just pick up a book and enjoy it.
◊ The installation consist of a mix of recycled materials and provides sheltered shelving for the books, seating areas and
has a solar powered sound system that helps reproduce audio books and aids during workshops and presentations.

I worked on the project doing the design of the installation and finding sponsors to make it ́s production possible. Given
the social nature of the project, it felt important to showcase recycled materials that are not very commonly seen and
incorporate some sustainable technology like solar power, which happens to be very helpful in public spaces.
We managed to find different recycled material manufacturers that were willing to help us make the project come true by
donating their excess stock in order to make the elements for the installation.

The pilot was held during Abierto Mexicano de Diseño 2016, where we were able to install in one of the most crowded squares downtown, La Alameda. The results exceeded our expectations. People were actually taking part in the activities and spending some time from their busy day just to seat down and read. An unexpected result was the excitement amongst homeless people and kids living on the street.
In Mexico City you need to have a residence proof in order to take books from public libraries, and for some of these people the mere idea of entering one is out of the question. They were respectful and came several times during the time the installation was there.

LibroLibre has been invited by different events, museums and organizations to set place near them. The project is currently on hiatus, since it was an independent effort that does not have a financial structure behind it.
