Hinamatsuri-inspired Packaging Design

Hinamatsuri-inspired Packaging Design
Hinamatsuri, also known as Girl's Day, is a festival in Japan where people celebrate for their daughter, praying for their success, health and happiness in life. There are two interesting items in this festival that caught my attention, which is the Hinazakari and Hishi-mochi. Thereby, I decided to use Hinamatsuri as the based concept for my Seasonal Food Packaging Assignment.
Display design
Hinazakari, which is dolls display on a multi-tiered stand covered with red-carpet is one of the interesting feature in Hinamatsuri. Each tier have a different doll represents different status. On the top is the Imperial Dolls, follow by Court Ladies, Male Musicians etc. Tanuki (Japanese Racoon Dog) is implemented in the doll design instead of the classic human doll. This is because in Japanese belief, Tanuki are master of disguise and I want to use this to create a parody where the tanuki disguise themselves as human to celebrate this festival.
Logo Design
Hishi-mochi is a unique mochi served during Hinamatsuri. The Hishi-mochi have three colored layers, from top is pink, white and bottom is green. Each colour symbolize different aspect. Pink represents Sakura Bloosom, White represents Snow, and Green represents New Growth. In the design, each color are being used to indicate the flavor of the mochi and to tell people what the color symbolize. The tail of tanuki is used in each logo to emphasize that they are master of disguise.
External Design
The external design is to mimic the appearance of the hishi-mochi. When the three different flavored mochi package are stack together, it will form the layered structure of the hishi-mochi.
Gimmick
The concept of pop-up books are used as a gimmick for the product. When the mochi package is open, the display inside will pop-up just like the image below. The red color of the inner package is to mimic the red carpet of the multi-tier stand. This gimmick enables the package to turn from a normal package to a display item.
