IM 113 Assignment 1

Type: Portrait
Location: Apartment interior
Date: 9/10/13
Notes: This created an interesting portrait for depicting an everyday activity in a native environment.
Altered Portrait

I achieved this effect using a combination of an exposure adjustment layer and a color balance adjustment layer. The colors for highlights, midtones, and shadows were altered independently to get a unique range. Significant gamma correction was necessary as well.

I used this combination to highten contrast in a manner that I could optimize to achieve the full range on the subject's face.
Type: Landscape
Location: Apartment interior
Date: 9/10/13
Notes: This perspective shows more of the environment, almost as if we are looking out from where the rest of the shots take place. The popcorn bucket in the foreground establishes this link.
Altered Landscape

A duplicate layer was created, then put through a Gaussian blur. After this, I used a mask to reveal the distance objects in focus. It is also slightly cropped to remove an awkward wall edge on the left.

This simulation of DoF keeps viewers from trying to focus on the popcorn bucket while still keeping it in the image, further enhancing it as a landscape image.
Type: Action
Location: Apartment interior
Date: 9/10/13
Notes: The pouring of the popcorn made for an excellent opportunity to demonstrate motion blur. Additionally, popcorn is not something we generally think of as portrayed this way.
Altered Action

A simple brightness/contrast adjustment layer with a mask hiding everything but the bucket and popcorn was the method used here.

The effect creates excitement by rendering the blurred popcorn as something akin to fire and coals.
Type: Detail
Location: Apartment interior
Date: 9/10/13
Notes: Popcorn kernals were perfect for getting a nice texture as well as demonstrating DoF.
Altered Detail

A hand-made vignette was added by flipping a selection from an ellipse and filling with black, followed by an extreme Gaussian blur. This was on its own layer above the background, which has a curves adjustment layer with heightened red and green values. The image was also cropped to remove blank space above the subject.

The vignette and color alterations make the in-focus popcorn more prominent and eye-catching, compared to the rest of the image.
Type: Rule of Thirds
Location: Apartment interior
Date: 9/10/13
Notes: Using a foreground object with a clear edge like the bucket is effective at demonstrating the rule of thirds. The distance between the sections creates difference in size of the same object (the kernels), further differentiating the segments for clarity.
Altered Rule of Thirds

The changes are the result of a single exposure adjustment layer with offset and gamma correction.

I used this so as to alter the appearance the popcorn in such a way as to make it seem to have a different density. This makes the altered shot look almost crunchy compared to the original popcorn.
Type: Symmetrical
Location: Apartment interior
Date: 9/10/13
Notes: I found the layer-like pattern of the objects as they ascend to provide a good contrast to the horizontal sameness.
Altered Symmetrical

The result was devised by including a black & white adjustment layer with a heavily altered mask. After this, the cushion crack on the right was cropped out along with some space on top.

The adjustment layer removed yellow reflections on the seat, while the mask allowed me to keep the popcorn realistic and retain the pillow's red eye-catching trait. Cropping the image reduced excess blank space on top and removed a asymmetric trait.
