WHAT HAPPENED ON PERU?: On the evening of november 9th, peruvian president Martín Vizcarra was ousted by the country's deeply disliked congress, on the basis of 'moral incapacity' and just five months apart from new elections. Vizcarra had attempts to stamp out deep-seated corruption. He has also been acused of wrong doings but not blocked any investigations in these matters. Based solely on unproven suspicions, the congress ousted him, violating due process and constitutional order. Moreover: 68 of 130 congressmen are being investigated or indicted for alleged crimes ranging from money laundering to murder. Most political parties at congress used the force of votes to put our country over the edge, only to satisfy their reckless ambitions of power. (Source: @sspx)

The country was shortly ruled by de facto president Manuel Merino (who previously led the Congress presidency). We, peruvians, are furious at a group of politicians that have put us in high inestability in pursuit of their petty disputes. In the middle of a devastating pandemic, economic reccesion, and high rates of unemployment, we brace for even harder times. The protests against his goverment, which occurred throughout the country (as well as in foreign cities around the world), left the death of 2 young protesters, Inti Sotelo and Bryan Jack Pintado, by the exccesive police brutality and repression on the night of November 14th (14N). At the noon next day, and with several ministers who had already resigned from the de-facto goverment, Manuel Merino resigned from the presidency of Peru.

QUÉ PASÓ EN PERÚ?: En la noche del 9 de noviembre, el presidente peruano Martín Vizcarra fue derrocado por el congreso del país, profundamente disgustado, sobre la base de una "incapacidad moral" y sólo cinco meses antes de las nuevas elecciones. Vizcarra intentó acabar con la corrupción profundamente arraigada. También ha sido acusado de irregularidades, pero no ha bloqueado ninguna investigación sobre estos asuntos. Basándose únicamente en sospechas no demostradas, el Congreso lo destituyó, violando el debido proceso y el orden constitucional. Además, 68 de los 130 congresistas están siendo investigados o procesados por presuntos delitos que van desde el lavado de activos hasta el asesinato. La mayoría de los partidos políticos en el Congreso utilizaron la fuerza de los votos para poner a nuestro país al límite, solo para satisfacer sus imprudentes ambiciones de poder. (Fuente: @sspx)

El país fue gobernado en breve por el presidente de facto Manuel Merino (quien anteriormente dirigió la presidencia del Congreso). Los peruanos estamos furiosos con un grupo de políticos que nos han puesto en alta inestabilidad en pos de sus mezquinas disputas. En medio de una pandemia devastadora, una recesión económica y altas tasas de desempleo, nos preparamos para tiempos aún más difíciles. Las protestas en contra de su gobierno, que se dieron a lo largo de todo el país tanto como en ciudades del extranjero, dejaron la muerte de 2 jóvenes manifestantes, Inti Sotelo y Bryan Jack Pintado, por parte de la represión policial desmedida la noche del 14 de noviembre. Al mediodía del día siguiente, y con varios ministros que ya habían renunciado a su gabinete, Manuel Merino renuncia a la presidencia del Perú.

1. The 'Not my president' poster series

Eng: NOT MY PRESIDENT

ENG: The first series of posters was created an hour after Merino was declared president by the Congress of the Republic. It originally consisted of 3 posters (which was later expanded to 34) and was later titled 'Not my President'. The base poster, where Merino's face can be seen along with the repeating typography, was shared by several Internet users the night he took office. For the following days and given that an open-source license for free use was granted, the poster obtained a greater reach within the first protests in the city of Lima. The expanded series, also open source and free to be modified, was shared with the public on Thursday 12, being able to help the protesters to have ready to print A3 posters to be taken to the streets. The content of these was designed to make a call to action to citizens, to be ironic about the situation through a much more millennial language -with references from pop culture- and criticize and deny the political position of the de facto president.

ESP: La primera serie de afiches fue creada una hora después de que Merino fuera declarado presidente de la república del Perú por el Congreso de la República. Originalmente constaba de 3 afiches (que luego se extendió a 34) y fue titulada posteriormente 'No es mi presidente'. El afiche base, donde se observa el rostro de Merino junto con la tipografía en repetición fue compartida por varios internautas la noche en la que se asumió el mando. Para los días siguientes y dado a que se otorgó una licencia open-source de libre uso, el afiche obtuvo un alcance mayor dentro de las primeras protestas en la ciudad de Lima. La serie expandida, también de uso libre y para modificaciones, fue compartida al público el jueves 12, pudiendo ayudar a los protestantes a tener material listo para imprimir y salir a las calles. El contenido de estos fue pensado para hacer un llamado a la acción a la ciudadanía, ironizar sobre la coyuntura mediante un lenguaje mucho más millenial y con referentes de la cultura pop y criticar la posición política del presidente de facto.

ENG: (REUTERS) Peru’s younger generation - dubbed the ‘bicentennials’ in reference to the 200-year anniversary of Peruvian independence next year - were at the heart of recent protests that led to the resignation of the country’s interim president on Sunday. Young Peruvians railed against the lawmakers as corrupt, waving banners calling for constitutional change. Peru’s bicentennials could be crucial in the April election. Those between 20-34 years of age make up about 40% of those of mandatory voting age, official figures show. They have grown up in a rapidly changing Peru, which has seen years of strong economic growth on the back of mining exports and given them access to communication tools and information their parents could never have imagined. The movement as yet has no visible leaders, and anyone under 25 is too young to run for Congress themselves.

“Our generation has come together for this,” said 20-year-old Evelyn Borja. “This is the first time I feel a part of politics.”

ESP: (REUTERS) La generación más joven de Perú, apodada los 'bicentenarios' en referencia al 200 aniversario de la independencia peruana el próximo año, estuvo en el centro de las recientes protestas que llevaron a la renuncia del presidente interino del país el domingo. Los jóvenes peruanos criticaron a los legisladores como corruptos, agitando pancartas pidiendo un cambio constitucional. Los bicentenarios de Perú podrían ser cruciales en las elecciones de abril. Los que tienen entre 20 y 34 años representan alrededor del 40% de los que tienen la edad obligatoria para votar, según muestran las cifras oficiales. Han crecido en un Perú que cambia rápidamente, que ha experimentado años de fuerte crecimiento económico gracias a las exportaciones mineras y les ha dado acceso a herramientas de comunicación e información que sus padres nunca hubieran imaginado. El movimiento aún no tiene líderes visibles, y cualquier persona menor de 25 años es demasiado joven para postularse para el Congreso.

3. Merino's house mapping intervention incident

PERU21 (NOV 13TH): A group of protesters who came to the home of the President of the Republic, Manuel Merino, located in the district of San Borja (Lima), projected the face of the president on the front of his house as a form of protest, in order to demand that he resign from office. The young protesters indicated at all times that Manuel Merino did not represent them as president. In this sense, amid harangues and 'cacerolazos', they urged that the current head of state resign. Likewise, a large number of agents of the National Police of Peru (PNP) is in the place to avoid any type of confrontation. In addition, so that the protesters do not approach the door of the president's house. It is worth mentioning that, since the afternoon, these young people have arrived at the front of the president's house in protest at his swearing-in and against the presidential vacancy. "

The artistic intervention was carried out by the audiovisual artists Rebeca Morimoto, Miguel Quiñones, Joaquin Belaunde and Luis Enrique Zela.

PERU21 (13 NOV): "Un grupo de protestantes que llegó a la vivienda del presidente de la República, Manuel Merino, ubicado en el distrito de San Borja, proyectó el rostro del mandatario en el frontis de su casa como modo de protesta, a fin de exigirle que renuncie al cargo. Los jóvenes indicaron en todo momento que Manuel Merino no los representaba como presidente. En ese sentido, en medio de arengas y cacerolazos, instaron que el actual jefe de Estado dimita. Asimismo, un gran número de agentes de la Policía Nacional del Perú (PNP) se encuentra en el lugar para evitar cualquier tipo de enfrentamiento. Además, para que los manifestantes no se acerquen a la puerta de la vivienda del mandatario. Cabe mencionar que, desde horas de la tarde, estos jóvenes han llegado al frontis de la casa del mandatario en protesta a su juramentación y en contra de la vacancia presidencial."

La intervención artística fue llevada a cabo por los artistas audiovisuales Rebeca Morimoto, Miguel Quiñones, Joaquin Belaunde y Luis Enrique Zela.

4. Lince Neighborhood Mapping project

ENG: 'Los Mirtos (Street name in Lince district), the time is NOW'

ENG: On the night of November 14, the network of artists from the district of Lince district (Lima) activated various mapping installations on different walls of the neighborhood with moving posters from a series dedicated solely to the district. "Lince the Moment is Now" was a moving poster and video made for mapping purposes that brought together all the names of the 80 streets that make up the district in order to unify the collective spirit regarding the political situation. A direct call to action to all residents of the district to join the popular outrage over the coup.

ESP: La noche del 14 de noviembre, la red de artistas del distrito y barrio de Lince (Lima) activaron en distintas paredes del vecindario diversas instalaciones de mapping con los afiches en movimiento de una serie dedicada únicamente al distrito. "Lince el Momento es Ahora" fue un afiche en movimiento y pieza para mapping que aglomeraba a todos los nombres de las 80 calles que componen el distrito a modo de unificar el espíritu colectivo con respecto a la situación política. Un llamado directo a la acción a todos los vecinos del distrito para que se sumaran a la indignación popular sobre el golpe de estado.

6. Post-Resign 'Juicio ahora' (Trial now)

ENG: The second batch of posters in the series was released on Sunday, November 15, the day Manuel Merino resigned from the presidency. The content of this new extension of the series was intended to be offered as open source printing material for the Protestants who marched in the following days. The content was based on denouncing the post-resignation process where it was requested that judicial responsibility be taken over the 2 deaths caused in the protests (Inti and Jack) by Manuel Merino and Prime Minister Antero Flores Aráoz, criticizing the irresponsibility of the congressmen due to the political instability caused, to support the results obtained by the 'bicentennial generation' and to demand the process of looking for missing Protestants.

La segunda tanda de posters de la serie fue lanzada el domingo 15 de noviembre, el día en que Manuel Merino renunció a la presidencia. El contenido de esta nueva extensión de la serie buscaba ofrecerse como ayuda y material de impresión para los protestantes que marcharan en los días siguientes. El contenido estaba basado en denunciar el proceso de post-renuncia donde se pedía que se tome la responsabilidad judicial sobre las 2 muertes ocasionadas en las protestas (Inti y Jack) por parte de Manuel Merino y el primer ministro Antero Flores Aráoz, critícar a la irresponsabilidad de los congresistas por la inestabilidad política propiciada, apoyar los resultados obtenidos por la 'generación bicentenario' y reclamar por la aparición de protestantes desaparecidos (hasta ese entonces).

6. The Impact / El impacto

ENG: Due to the open source nature of the posters, many graphic artists at the time were able to find quite special collaboration spaces. The media coverage and social interest over the poster 'Not my president' obtained for many other artists an inspiration base to generate new audiovisual, plastic and artistic content on various platforms to spread the political message.

ESP: Debido a la naturaleza open source de los posters, muchos artistas gráficos durante la coyuntura pudimos encontrar espacios de colaboración bastante especiales. La repercusión mediática del afiche 'No es mi presidente' obtuvo para muchos otros artistas una base de inspiración para generar nuevos contenidos audiovisuales, plásticos y artísticos en diversas plataformas para masificar el mensaje político.
