Through Fear is an immersive online article about Italian mafias, an experimental approach to data driven storytelling.

As a team of five students, we gathered and analyzed a rich amount of statistical and anthropological material about the social contexts touched by mafias, with the goal of returning a view capable of raising a debate around the role of fear as a manipulation technique.

We did it in this long-scroll journalistic insight, which you can visit here  THROUGH FEAR (browser supported: Chrome/Firefox web, Chrome/Firefox/Safari mobile)
For the first half of the article we decided to give just plain statistical data, describing how powerful and wealthy mafias still are in Italy, while in the second section we wanted to give an example of how this criminal presence manages to lure the new generations, narrating the story of Emanuele Sibillo, one of the youngest bosses in the contemporary scenario.

In order to split the two different registers, we used a monochromatic pattern for the whole page, placing a predominantly black graphic in the first half and inverting it to its white opposite for the second half. We used halftone dotted pictures and videos to render the feeling of a newspaper archive. We also gave them a faster scrolling speed than the rest of the page, both for interactive purposes and for giving the idea of a life that died out too fast.
