We have officially reached the half-way point of our 2018 Spring Membership Drive. We know some people out there are still on the fence and asking themselves “Why should I join AWC?” Well, we’ve got an answer. Lilia is one of our newest members, having joined in November 2017. She has since joined the chapter’s Board of Directors and serves as the VP of Marketing and Communications (MarComm). We learned a little bit about Lilia, and she shared why she joined AWC.

Lilia’s communication background has literally taken her across the country. While she began at the University of La Verne in Los Angeles for her Bachelor’s in journalism, she then went to New York University for her Master’s in media, culture and communications before making her way back to the west coast. She now works for King County as the communications manager for the Department of Elections. A San Diego native, working for the county has provided her with the opportunity to learn about the King County community while further developing her career.

Lilia found AWC thanks to a Google search. While she has been involved with other associations and groups, she was looking for an organization that would benefit her. She wanted to invest in herself and in her interest in communications.

So far Lilia has been enjoying the opportunity to work alongside women who are passionate about the work AWC is doing to help women navigate through the communications industry.

“We are all involved because we want to be, which is so awesome. Everyone is a volunteer and brings a level of skills, enthusiasm and knowledge to our tasks and discussion that is refreshing because they want to be there, they want to be involved,” Lilia said.

As VP of MarComm for our Seattle chapter, Lilia has been able to utilize her previous experiences working on other association boards, where she has served as a lead for communications and website work, and took on project management responsibilities. In her current position with AWC, she will be able to blend the two to get involved with the chapter. One of her current projects is leading in the rebrand of the Seattle chapter, including redesigning the website.

Fun Facts:
- She loves sitting out on the beach with friends, preferably with a mojito in hand
- She loves to craft and sew, and is obsessed with beads and glitter
- She loves traveling, especially on road trips
- Her all-time favorite band is the Spice Girls
