DRI Proceeding with Clinical Trial Involving Islets

Drawing upon more than three decades of experience, Allan L. Pashcow serves as the Managing partner of Town Realty Co., LLC, where he oversees a team of property managers and on-site property staff responsible for managing more than 1,400 rental apartment units on Long Island. He Joined the firm in 1988. Outside of his professional endeavors, Allan L. Pashcow is a board member with several organizations, including the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Committed to developing a biological cure for diabetes, the DRI has made significant progress in that regard since its inception in 1971. Through research and clinical trials, it was successful in showing the effectiveness of islet transplantation to remove the need for insulin therapy for individuals with type 1 diabetes.

Building upon its work in islet transplantation, it is now conducting a clinical trial to test the omentum, a lining that covers abdominal organs, as an alternative location for islet cells transplantation. As it stands, cells are currently infused into the recipient's liver, which, while effective, is not an optimal site.

Islets are clusters of insulin-producing cells located in the pancreas. However, they cease to function in individuals with type 1 diabetes. The goal of the DRI clinical trial is to show the omentum as a safe and effective location for a DRI BioHub, which is a bioengineered device or "mini organ" designed to function as the native pancreas with real islets. The omentum, DRI researchers believe, is better suited to assist in long-term islet survival.
