Design Achievement
The State Theatre New Jersey (STNJ) is a renowned theater with a seating capacity of 1,900, attracting approximately 200,000 guests during a typical season. The theater hosts a diverse range of performances, including Broadway musical tours, films, music concerts, and comedy shows. Originally established as a vaudeville house in 1921 with a seating capacity of 2,300, the STNJ has undergone several additions and renovations throughout its existence. Recognized for its cultural significance, the theater was featured in the PBS Docuseries "Treasures of New Jersey." Located in the vibrant arts community of New Brunswick, the STNJ has welcomed esteemed artists such as Tony Bennett and Diana Ross over the years. With its last major update taking place in 1988, the theater required enhancements to meet contemporary standards for performances and improve patron comfort and accessibility. Following a successful Concept Design Study conducted by DLR Group in December 2019, the leadership team of STNJ authorized a Design/Build project with Turner Construction. The ongoing upgrades encompass various aspects, including the installation of a newly designed exterior blade sign, implementation of wayfinding and signage, and the establishment of a donor program to support the theater's operations and development.

Scope Summary

The prominent highlight of the entire project is the new exterior sign, which draws inspiration from the STNJ's rich 100-year history of signage. To facilitate the installation of this 30-foot tall illuminated sign, the STNJ obtained bulk variances from the city's Planning Board. The sign is suspended from the top of the building and secured to the signature panel marquee. Alongside the blade sign, the board granted approval for a smaller canopy sign to be placed above a side entrance of the theater. Furthermore, an extensive wayfinding and signage package was developed, incorporating design elements that pay homage to the historic building's unique features. As part of the package, custom art deco patterns were created to serve as wall coverings throughout the facility. DLR Group played a pivotal role in this project, providing architecture, interior design, and experiential graphic design services.
