Thank you for visiting my page - I am Rick Lederer-Barnes, a GIS Specialist located in Cambridge, New York, and the Sole Proprietor of Upstate GIS. I have over 20 years of GIS experience with a focus on providing geospatial analyses and high quality maps and graphics to a wide range of clients. Below is a sampling of some of the work that I have created since starting Upstate GIS in the Spring of 2012.
The following image is a montage of maps which was created to summarize the first seven years of Upstate GIS being in business
Over the past few years, Upstate GIS has been providing mapping for municipal Natural Resources Inventories (NRI) - below is a sampling of NRI mapping
A digital map representing the Village of Cambridge, completed in a hand-drawn style using ArcGIS Pro and Adobe InDesign
This map was displayed in the gallery for the North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS) 2022 annual meeting. The map was commissioned by the Lake Monticello Community Foundation to be used in a fundraising campaign. The foundation is planning to print and sell 500 copies of the map to raise funds for a new accessible playground.

This map was a lot of fun to make, especially trying to get as much detail as possible into a predefined poster size of 18" x 24," while still having the map be legible and inviting to the viewer. The map was created entirely in ArcGIS Pro. Several style elements were adapted from Warren Davison's “Draft Sketch” style (https://arcg.is/0bmDaP). The primary font used is Sarah Bell Maps 'BellTopo Sans' (https://lnkd.in/g4bGWVVU). Base data from Virginia Geographic Information Network and the USGS.

In 2023 Upstate GIS started creating and updating trail maps for the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance. The maps are geoPDFs so users are able to download and use the maps for free within the Avenza Maps app and see where they are (approximately) within the preserve. The maps are designed to reproduce in black and white, letter size, so inexpensive paper copies are available a the preserves, in addition to the large (24x36) full color poster at the trailhead. These maps are being created in ArcGIS Pro.
Upstate GIS also provides online mapping through ArcGIS Online. Below are screen captures of a StoryMap created by Upstate GIS to summarize the Rensselaer County Conservation Plan. The StoryMap is available to view here: https://arcg.is/1KSH1e
An example of a blending of hand and digital - the base map was drawn using watercolor pencils and then roads, hillshading and labels were added in Adobe Photoshop with the final product printed on watercolor paper to add additional texture to the map
An example of going beyond the GIS analysis and cartography to create an informational poster, using Adobe InDesign - this was the first "big" project completed by Upstate GIS
This map was for a personal family project. It depicts the route my grandfather traveled while working on a steel freighter in the 1930s. The ports were derived from his diaries as was some of the route detail. The base map was made using Natural Earth data and all of the cartography was completed with ArcGIS Pro.
This map was for another personal family project. It depicts the route two family members undertook in the summer of 2021. The base map was made using Natural Earth data and all of the cartography was completed with ArcGIS Pro. Some of the styling was modified from Warren Davison's Historical Map Effects ArcGIS Pro style.
