A wise man once said: “We have to take note of the little things, because one day we will realize they were the big things.” 

 

I grew up in a family of two brothers and four cousins- all boys. Being the only girl in our family contributed to the person I am today on so many levels. When we were kids, we visited my grand- parents every Sunday. They lived in a big house with a lush garden- the kind of garden kids could play in all day. There were many majestic trees in which my grandfather built birdhouses for all the different species of feathered friends who entertained him seasonally. For our entertainment, my grandmother kept a box filled with outfits, props and toys. We were never bored or tired of the con- tent of that box. We dressed up as different characters, superheroes and my considering grand- mother made sure that there were fairy dresses and a Supergirl-cape just for me. 

 

Thinking back on those days, this is when the Boksombende came into existence. In that fantasy garden our little ‘bende’ played for hours on end, not realizing then the importance and value of im- agination and creativity. I took the tiny memories for granted and only now realize that they were all factors turning me into the designer I am today.
