Scivolare Mandoline Slicer

Industrial Design
Traditional mandoline slicers, used for cutting large amounts of food into thin slices, are extremely dangerous. Almost all the mandoline slicer users I talked to had cut themselves on one. Scivolare (Italian for "slice") is a total revision of the traditional mandoline slicer, serving the same purpose but much more safely.

Cutaway view illustrating the unique cutting mechanics. Users' hand holding the cucumber rests safely on the upper platform (indicated by finger prints) while the blade platform (in blue) slides back and forth actuated by the handle in the user's other hand.

The Scivolare prototype contains over 30 pieces.

To adjust the thickness of the food slices, users simply rotate the white knob at the rear.
The blade tray removes for easy cleaning.
The magnetic logo plate removes, revealing screws which allow the handle to be switched to the left side for left-handed users.
