Movie Poster - Design

MOVIE POSTER DESIGNS

My project was to create 5 posters of various genres using the same title. I could come up with a title of choice that would fit into different genres. The genres included Adventure Fantasy, Sci-Fi Horror, Romantic Thriller, True Crime and Romantic Musical.

1. ADVENTURE FANTASY

"A type of adventure film where the action takes place in imaginary lands with strange beasts, wizards and witches". To create a poster for this genre, I had to go through various existing movies and filter out those posters that deliver an extra edge in terms of its imagery and typography. I made a mood-board of the ones that caught my eye and the ones that I could use as an inspiration in my design.

Final design:
The poster uses a gothic typeface named "Evanescent" to create a mystical mood, paired with another mystical sans-serif typeface. The imagery includes a castle in the foreground with the planet Mars in the background. The title is also reflected on the small puddle in the image. It was tricky to find a typeface that could convey the theme but Evanescent does a great job in doing so.

2. SCI-FI HORROR

"Sci-Fi Horror is a sub-genre of both Science Fiction and Horror that uses scientific advances or futuristic settings as a source of fear.". To create a poster for this genre, I studied numerous posters of sci-fi horror movies. I narrowed down a few of the latest ones. I knew I wanted to use something related to time-travel. I had to include elements of technology and also that of gory blood-like elements. A few posters made it to my mood-board.

Final design:
The poster uses the typeface "Split" to depict horror and is paired with a simple sans-serif typeface. The imagery includes a digital clock in the background along with a bloody hand erupting from the middle of the road. The blooded fist also has a glitch effect to emphasize the essence of science and technical background to the movie.

3. ROMANTIC THRILLER

"A Romantic thriller or a romance thriller is a narrative that involves romance and thrill". In order to create a poster for this genre, I had to look for posters that was capable of creating curiosity in the viewer, without obviously giving out major details of the narrative. I picked some movies like Thirst, Perfume, All I see is you, etc., that I as a viewer was intrigued to know what the movie was about.

Final design:
The poster uses a simple sans-serif typeface "Bebas Neue". I used a bit of maxi-typography to allow the shower in the image, to hide the text, much like the shadow of the man behind the woman in shower. I added noise and changed the overall hue of the poster to reflect mystery and suspense.

4. TRUE CRIME

"True crime is a nonfiction literary, podcast, and film genre in which the author examines an actual crime and details the actions of real people". During ideation process, I went through numerous posters of this genre to learn its aesthetics, the alignments, imageries, typefaces and colors used. The below posters caught my eye for various reasons. It was so minimally designed. The imagery used was strong and powerful while the typography was kept simple and minimal.

Final design:
Again, the poster uses a simple sans-serif typeface "Bebas Neue". I broke down the title into three lines, each with fading transparency. I paired with a similar typeface with varying kerning. I chose a very simple imagery of a woman and added in additional shapes to depict the bars of a prison.

5. ROMANTIC MUSICAL

"Musical is a form of genre that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole". To design a poster for this genre was the most trickiest of them all. I had to ensure that the poster was romantic and fun but not cheesy. A couple of posters in my mood-board:

Final design:
I used a script typeface for this poster called "Breathing Personal" and paired it with a sans-serif typeface. I used a slight neon-grow effect for the typeface. I have also included a glowing triangular shape to indicate a "play" button. I used a simple black and white imagery of a couple gearing up for dance.

Through this project, I not only got a chance to study five genres of movies among numerous others, but I also learnt to apply various Photoshop techniques to create each of them. I have a deeper knowledge about typography, typefaces and type-pairing. I have a better experience in choosing the right typeface to convey a certain emotion and more insight into the importance of type-psychology.
