John John Florence Surf (S.I. #4) Project

Owen Basso John John Florence (S.I. #4)
For this project, I wanted to make it about legendary surfer John John Florence born in Honolulu Hawaii. First, I imported some photos of John John that I wanted to use for center subject photos.
I decided to use the photo on the right as my subject picture, then imported many different pictures of John John surfing as well as a solo shot of him.
I picked one picture of JJ hitting a big air and cut the action shot out and also moved the solo shot of JJ to the front.
At this point, I wasn't really entirely sure of what I was going to do but then got the idea to use a picture of JJ surfing on a wave on one side of the subject photo. I wasn't set on the photo above but set it there for a placeholder for now.
For this project, I did not want to use a generic font so I went online and found a cool surf looking font.
I decided not to use the picture I chose initially of JJ surfing the wave on the left, I chose a different one where the wave was taller and more clear and used a brush with low opacity to make it blend into the background. I also decided to not use the solo shot of JJ on the right and replaced it with a photo of him leaning his head on his board with his eyes closed. I also started to experiment with colors for a background and started with navy blue. Lastly I used the new font I found and wrote JJ's full name in the top left.
I thought that the solid blue didn't encompass the theme of surfing and all so I found a picture of a sunset, flipped it upside down and used it as a background. I also started to color the JJ and the Florence, colors sampled from the flag around his neck.
I thought that the right top side of the piece was a little boring so I moved the JJ text to go across the entire top and found another wave and used a brush with low opacity to make it blend into the background.
I thought that right side of the piece was a little boring and the photo of JJ leaning his head on the board, and the new wave didn't fulfill the side, so I deleted that photo and found another picture of JJ surfing and looking at the camera and imported it. I then used a brush on low opacity to blend the new wave into the background.
Lastly, I thought the font up top didn't stand out enough so I duplicated each font text moved the copy behind it and made it white. I also did the same for the center picture of JJ but in black to make it stand out more and make the piece itself a little more symmetrical. I also moved each of the race photos up a little bit. For the wave photo on the left, there was something weird going on in the bottom so I used a stamp tool and eliminated that weird section and made the wave look more uniform. Lastly I did some final adjustments; the final product is below.
