Anthropology & Sociology Department Murals / Fall 2020

CDES 3215 began with a mural for the anthropology and sociology departments. After a meeting with an anthropology professor, it was clear that the murals needed to communicate the values of anthropology and sociology while defining them as two separate but connected departments. The anthropology side needed to reference its four focuses of culture, language, archeology, and physical science, whereas the sociology side was to show people and their relationships on a large scale, emphasized through groups, societies, and institutions. It was important to avoid using mission statements, overt MSU branding, images of evolution and individuals, and the othering and exoticizing of any cultures. To demonstrate the variety of concepts with a balance of images and typography, the words “ANTHROPOLOGY” and “SOCIOLOGY” were masked with photos pertaining to the fields. MSU branding was kept subtle with official colors and typefaces, but no logo or direct mentions of the university.
