David Carson Poster / Fall 2019

I was assigned David Carson as a designer to emulate the style of for a CDES 2222 project, in which we used a current news headline to use in a poster. Deciding which headline to use was a step in itself, as I had to consider what themes and imagery would complement Carson's infamous, chaotic work. I chose “For a Cooler Climate, Just Add Ice” because Carson’s background as a surfer and history living on the coasts of Texas, Florida, and California stood out to me, making the environmental, nature-based theme relevant. Knowing that one of the most iconic things about his work is that there are no evident design rules adhered to, I was able to experiment quite a bit with my subject, content, and process, playing with layering of photos and type to make a very textured collage. However, having so few guidelines on what to do or not do also became a challenge, as it was sometimes hard to tell if I was pushing the experimentation hard enough, or if my work resembled Carson’s enough.
