Border Objects First Series: We were cooperating with Het Nieuwe Instituut (Rotterdam) throughout our whole project and participating in the program of Neuhaus 19/05 – 15/09/2019
“As students of Design Academy Eindhoven, we are asked to design design. We are asked to question what design is actually for, and in turn, what we are here for. However, even in a school where we are asked to develop an avant garde stance in our work and worldviews, the idea that design holds all the answers for our failing world still persists. We seem unable to remove ourselves - the human - from the centre of design discourse and activity. We, the collective, are attempting to shift away from the human-centered context in which design currently operates by means of three alternative and intersecting methodologies."

Vertical farming represents the paroxysm of agricultural evolution; an ever-increasing yield for an ever-decreasing space. Yet this very fragile and demanding system is known to produce weak tasteless fruits and vegetables in sterile and enclosed environments. They are designed for humans who in turn become so disconnected from nature that they do not realise this dynamic shift that occurs in the making of food and ecosystems. Humanponics becomes a way for humans to reconnect with farming and be at the center of their own food ecosystem: a closed circle in which humans and nature are co-dependent: the moisture of the breath of the human giving the plant a source of energy and sustainability; and the plant giving to the human its oxygen and nutrients.
