Poetry provides us the maximum fantasy with its short words. Artist’s book provides us with the artist’s fragmented visions collectively.

For the project Spatium, I chose ten poems from Kathrin Schmidt’s work and then illustrated them. Each poem coordinates with a closed spread. The spreads stand for a full heart, which is yet closed. As the spreads get bigger, broader windows with illustrations are shown within the bigger Spatium.

Offset is the keyword of this project: both for the offset of spread arrangement and the offset of image/text interpretation. This method gives the cover a clear boundary of each poem. The content of each spread overlaps with the previous spread so that the exterior surface can remain blank. The excitement of opening the pages of a book will be magnified through the blank cover. The edition is Riso printed.

Poems from Kathrin Schmidt are just like windows. They are delicate but intense. The vision is still stepping toward us. Drawing is my method of depiction of how I narrate those visions.

I wanted to create a room for poems and drawings so they can ferment. And the half sealed spreads were made as to their Spatium.
