This project <Monkey see, Meme-key Do> is designed to raise a question about today's meme, which often distorts one's image as a monkey while widly consumed as an instant pleasure.
Throughout this project, this question is repeatedly thrown to viewers. Just like well known idiom, "make a monkey out of somebody", are we making a monkey out of somebody by participating today's meme culture?
Being humiliated is described as a monkey in a zoo. Based on this idea, I have named a meme as a meme-key, which becomes a main element of this project.
Twenty six famous memes with an intention of humiliating and ridiculing someone are selected. Throughout this process ‘Meme-key’ A to Z is created.
Three designs, video, website, and report are created. Video is a collection of ‘Meme-keys’ which complies the form of a *mashup with music and moving images.
<Meme-key Report> is a report book which summarizes the contents in the video and website. It contains a purpose and a background of the project. It also explains different types of meme and the cases which memes are misused, process of desinging this project, and background of memes used in Meme-keys. It consists of two parts, part 1. Meme and part 2. Mem-key.
