THE WHISPER OF THE DISTILLERY – THE PRODUCTION OF RUM
Rum. Not just a drink, but a whole lifestyle.
But how is this drink that inspired Wilhelm Busch and Hemingway
made? Who are behind the work? And what steps are necessary
so you can enjoy the golden brown rum in a glass? I asked myself
all these questions and went in search of answers for my master’s
thesis.
The search led me to the subtropical island of Madeira, the erstwhile
export center of sugar for Europe. There sugar cane is still being
cultivated as in former times and made into rum. For fourteen days
I documented the steps from the sugar cane harvest, to the transport,
the processing, and finally to the finished rum.
The result of my documentation can be seen in this illustrated book.
