The Fan

This a metal fan, a prototype, and a rethinking of my design process of approaching a fan.

This project was a studio project of my Product Design 2 class. We would create a fan for a specific scenario and we would think conceptually.

"If I’m not designing for needs and problems, How will I design a fan?"
I was thinking about self-expression and visualization of "the concepts".

Plato’s theory of Forms denies the reality of "the material world", considering it only an image or copy of "the real world". So my design could be an visualization/materialization of my understanding in "the real world". It would be a mapping of my thought, which could be a product, a poet, or an architecture. In this case, it would be “a fan”.

The process would be self-expressed.

Could I use this self-expression way to design/construct a fan which is a purely functional consumer product?

The Readymades of Marcel Duchamp are ordinary manufactured objects that the artist selected and modified. But what if that object was manufactured by the artist himself? Then was the difference? To discuss that, I’d like to design an object, to visualize my imagery of "a fan". Then name it as "the fan".
