PODYJSKÝ REDYK
documentary photo series (from 2016)

The word "redyk" originates from Polish and refers to a traditional method of grazing and stabling cattle. Redyk is part of the folklore and history of some mountainous regions, especially in the Carpathians and Tatras. During redyk, cattle were grazed on mountain pastures during the summer and were moved from lower areas to higher mountain pastures.

Podyský Redyk originated from the necessity to move the herd from the pastures near Znojmo to the wintering place in Nový Přerov. The two-day route is almost 50 km long and runs mostly along the river Dyje. Apart from its practical function, the trip also has a social function - it is a meeting of cooperating shepherds and a celebration of the end of the season.

I have attended almost all the Redyks since 2016. At the beginning as a photographer, today more and more as a shepherd.
