Lugplugs (Branding Brief)

Based on it’s perceived function, this brief involved naming and designing a brand identity for a product, create the packaging for the product and finally, design a mock up for a website.
I had been asked to define it for its purpose, examine it in more abstract terms and define a new purpose, function and status.

My item was a bath plug so I developed the product from the aspect of it's appearance first and then follow with the products function. I found that there was a resemblance with the charateristics of a bath plug and a mini speaker. Furthermore I decided to set on the idea of developing a brand of headphones that had bathplugs as the speakers. Immediately I came up with the name “Lugplugs” that was both humorous and memorable.
Lugplugs allow customers to unplug from the reality of the real world and plug into the Lugplug world.
By purchasing these, customers would be able to access not only a unique sound with its exclusive bath plug feature but would also witness the unique appearance that not only personalises sound but also simplifies their individual choice.
My main focus for the logo was to somehow make the viewer immediately understand that the product is about the headphones by combing the simplified headphone symbol into the name Lugplugs. I wanted to keep the lettering rounded so that there is a flow within the logo and it also allowed me to bring both the image and type together to make the logo.
With the brand identity being unique, quirky and punchy, I wanted this to be evident in the packaging design for the headphones.

So I decided to create characters for each package to suit everyone’s individual personalities. The packaging functions by placing the headphones on the top of the box which has a character style face to the front of the packaging giving the illusion that this is how the headphone are to sit on your “lugs”. The back of the packaging is to be informative and explain more about the product for those who cannot fully come to grips with the unusual appearance.

The website to follow was to mirror the image of the packaging and what the brand stands for. The aim was to make it simple to navigate and create an online Lugplug environment that was unique to users.
Using the original function of a bath plug, to plug in, I decided to create a “Daily Plug” news feed to update users each day and a “SAOK IT UP” session that lets "Luglovers" chose music they would like to hear live online. The character of the brand is reflected strongly through the website design.
