HISTORY

Samurai (侍), or in Japanese called bushi (武士, [bu͍ꜜ.ɕi̥]) or buke (武 家), were medieval and early-modern Japanese military nobility.  According to translator William Scott Wilson: "In China, 侍 is a word that means waiting or accompanying someone in the ranks of society, and this is also true of the original Japanese term, the verb saburau and the noun saburai. In both countries the term usually means  "those who served were close to the aristocracy," then the pronunciation was changed to samurai. According to Wilson, the earliest reference to the word "samurai" appears in Kokin Wakashū (905-914), the first imperial anthology of poetry, completed in the first half of the century.  10
