"DdPeC" - 42 x 29 cm - 2020
An original work of art done firstly entirely by hand with pen and ink on 200g paper and then digitally tweaked.
Wanting to illustrate the national holiday of the day of "Portugal e de Camões", I made use of symbols from the history of both Portugal and of the figure "Luís Vaz de Camões", influent and intemporal writer and persona.
Symbols like the compass combined with roots ending with both son and moon, strongly refer to the vast heritage of my country, the time of great expeditions to the unknown and navigation, at the centre it forms a kind of "triskele", alluding to the great ancient "pagan" times.
The sword being a "espada preta de bordo" or "colhona" mirrors the proper specification of portuguese culture as well the might and the blood shed for centuries as this country became one an strove until today. It bears the detail of a shield present on the current banner.
The eye, the book and the leaves of laurel are mainly symbolic of the person in question.
All this things combined into an harmonic and proper composition.
