Collections

A collection typically translates directly to a series of things or items belonging to a set, place, or theme. The word collection comes from the Latin root Colligere meaning to gather. Pieces of a collection are retrieved by an individual or group for many reasons. What an individual deems a collectable can be a variety of things from something simple like coins, to something more excessive like fine art. However, the most important aspect of collections is that even though there is such a wide range of what one considers a collection, the gathered materials can inevitably tell you a lot about a single individual. This information can include anything like their personality traits, hobbies, and even their beliefs or things they idolize. Someone who generally collects hats, sneakers, and bracelets may typically be into fashion more than most, or they could be collecting them based off tv shows, games etc.  While someone who enjoys collecting historical items such as blades, guns, bills, and artwork would typically enjoy learning about our world history and the importance of the past.

When you visit someone’s home for the first time, you usually pay attention to the décor - plants, paintings, statues, furniture, etc. These are things people would purposely display to give their home a sense of their style, personality, and interests. Learning about family, new friends, and neighbors is always amusing. However, you can get an idea of this even if you just see the person on a regular basis at work or school. If they are always wearing a hat, or a pin with their outfits, it gives you an idea that this person has a collection of that item or is interested in a certain topic. Our ability to showcase our personality with collections is incredible, whether it is for fashion, a passion for a favorite tv show, or even someone’s keen interest in learning about the world through artifacts.

The importance from being able to collect anything, is that it not only helps show off our interests, it can also help us. Collections can help us learn more about the world, it can also help us potentially learn more about our own families, and for some it is simply cathartic and helps with their health. The reason for collections, much like their contents, can be for absolutely anything.

I chose this topic because the idea of a collection intrigues me. I like to learn about my friends, peers and even family members in terms of their interests to spark conversation. You can see the passion someone puts into collecting a series of items and how much it means to them. This is especially true when the collection is on display or worn out with an outfit. The idea that one can help their own mental health by the simple act of creating a collection is incredible as well.

Every single collection has the ability to be truly unique, personal, and fascinating.
