My photos from May 2019, recovery of a head from a stranded humpback whale in Turnagain Arm, near Girdwood, Alaska. We had to cut away an estimated 1,000 pounds of blubber to transport it to a commercial freezer in Anchorage. It was transported to a research facility in San Diego and is considered to be crucial to understanding what causes whales to strand themselves.
Sometimes you make new friends and pose with them in front of a whale carcass. It's a thing. That's me in the teal jacket.
