The background image for the original Kingdoms of Amalur IP site was designed to be a slowly moving star chart based heavily on the current constellations and star placements of stars as they exist in the modern night sky.

 

My task was to recreate a full star chart based on a specific placement in the world at a particular point in history, then stylize and build in constellations based on creatures and lore from within thr game's IP.

The final major constellation placement, after researching the appropriate time and placement (with a little bit of fudging so that I could get a better view of a few particular stars). 

Close-up of the Draco constellation, my personal favorite. Artist Devon Cady-Lee supported the project by providing the framework for approximately half of the constellations, which I then inked to uniform, and scanned into the final star chart.

 

All of the stars and cloud formations were drawn by hand and scanned, then hand-placed to be as close to historically accurate as possible--but overall the chart is still Historical Fiction.

Final full illustration with colors and textures, before the web guys took it and built it into the site. Constellations included: Signet, Virgo, Pices, Libra, Saggitarius, Casiopia, Scorpio, Aquarius, Capricorn, the Giraffe (forgot his name), plus a lot of other lesser known constellations.
