Spaces Once Places
May 2020: The COVID-19 pandemic has left the small Midwestern city of Iowa City reeling. The economy is largely dependent on the presence of University of Iowa students and small businesses. With both the university and businesses forced to close, the sight of another human being downtown, especially at night, is now a rare one. In an eerie exploration of empty spaces once filled with people, I documented my surroundings. The only other individuals I encountered were a few delivery drivers and two homeless men. The feeling of place once held by the area had all but faded away. The only remnants of once-densely-populated places were streetlights and vibrant signs gleaming against the dark of the night.
