Dayton RTA Map
Re-design
This is another one of those, "What were they thinking??" situations. Sometimes, you have to realize that not all design can be fashionable. We all have price limitations and others. I say nay, however. Good design can still be one on a budget. No longer should one have to choose between fashion and function!

Okay, but in all seriousness, you should AT LEAST have one or the other. The Dayton RTA is the public bus system. The maps can be found at random spots. They are single color (black), an awkward size, and have an awkward fold.

Okay. Here is my theory: because of the cut and fold of these, they can't be THAT inexpensive. Also, the size is too cumbersome for your pocket. I know that if I'm riding a bus, I want a map that is small, easy to fold, legible, easily accessible, and convenient all-around.

Without going into too much detail of the methods of my madness (too late?), I'll make a list of what I found wrong with the original and how I fixed them.

Price: Printed on one double-sided sheet of 8.5x11. A four color process is only used on the "cover" and is optional. Everything else is in black and a spot color of green in two tints.

Accessibility: Finding a map is hard and the online maps were not printer friendly. I made my map this size so it could be downloaded in PDF format and printed at home for easy access. No one wants to hunt down a map when they want to ride the bus. There are maps on both sides so you don't have to flip from front to back to go from schedule to map.

Legibility: Everything was too small and the type was awkward. I used different weights of Univers for the entire piece. I also made sure to give extra space in the columns and rows for the folds of the sheet so no type would wear with use.

Fold: As easy as one could make it: Folded in half, in half again, in half again. Presto change-o! You now have a convenient map that fits in your pocket or wallet!

There's more, but I'll let you enjoy your nap.
