Industrial Design
The Job
Our mission on this bike was to break away from the legacy of the Plasma 5, a time trial bike suitable for triathlon and do something completely new for this new Plasma 6, a bike completely dedicated to triathlon and therefore no longer subject to UCI rules (International Cycling Union). We were therefore allowed to open up considerably the field of possibilities.

How we did it
We started by understanding the constraints of professional triathletes, future users of this bike, like Sebastian Kienle. We then investigated several technologies and mechanical systems to meet these constraints and we finally drew lines, surfaces and volumes between these different needs.

The Product
The result is the most capable bike on the market today. Particularly fast, it is also agile, light and can carry all of the logistics needs (food, drink, repair equipment) for an Ironman. Aerodynamics was the keystone of this project. Everything has been thought out and developed so that all functionalities can be integrated and thus favor the air flow around the bicycle / cyclist system. This product has revived Scott's image in the triathlon market and places the brand among the best.

After a deep analysis of the market, we did the first sketches that will kick off the design process. A lot was done on Illustrator to be able to do smooth modifications and keep trace of them.

Few advance ideas were tested like this "double blade" cockpit setting system or a mono chaine stay. But a lot of those ideas transformed to be rather more aero, stiffer or lighter.

A first 3D model has been created to produce a 3D printing and go with it to the wind tunnel. The goal was to test different typologies of frame and see, for instance, if such ideas like the mono chain stay were that good or not worth it.

This model is the second to go in 3D printing. It was part of the refinement and done to test smaller iterations to get closer to the final shape and get a frame as fast as possible.

The third and last model is the one which reached production. Many prototypes were needed to have an optimal frame set in terms of weight and stiffness. The first graphical test also happened in this stage.

The frame is just one part of the bike. Many other parts needed to be designed.

The cockpit is very complicated due to its high settings abilities. Many small parts needed to be done in a similar language.

From A to Z, the design process took almost 3 years. The Plasma 6 Ultimate is the high-end model and will hit the market in the first quarter of 2021. Details pictures below.

The Plasma 6 was developed in close collaboration with Scott athletes. Sebastian Kienle is one of them and we hope he will bring this bike on the top step of podiums around the world.
