There are many basic concepts that underly the field of design. They are often categorized differently depending on philosophy or teaching methodology.
This set of posters was created to illustrate some of the basic principles of composition: balance, rhythm, dominant, symmetry, dynamics. The work is done by using combinations of simple shapes: lines and circles.
Balance is the visual principle of making a design appear equally weighted
throughout the composition.
Rhythm in art and design refers to a relationship between elements that creates
a sense of harmony . Rhythm can be seen in patterns, in relationships between
colours and shapes, and in repetitions of lines and forms.
Symmetry is the visual quality of repeating parts of an image across an axis,
along a path or around a center.
Visual dynamics is the energy created by the visual elements in a composition.
The dominant element in a design is the one with the greatest visual weight (or the one that everything else points to). It's the element that attracts the eye first, more than anything else on the page.
