Das muitas lendas criadas em torno do consumo do grão, a mais aceita conta sobre um pastor chamado Kaldi, que vivia na Abissínia, hoje Etiópia, há cerca de mil anos. Ele observou que suas cabras mudavam de comportamento quando mastigavam folhas e frutos de um dos arbustos dos campos. Elas ficavam mais alegres e motivadas. Após experimentar o fruto, Kaldi decidiu compartilhar o mesmo com os monges em um mosteiro. Primeiramente, ele os usou em forma de infusão e percebeu que a bebida o ajudava a resistir ao sono durante suas longas horas de leitura e oração. A história se espalhou rapidamente e todos quiseram provar da receita. De acordo com evidências históricas, a primeira vez que o café foi propositalmente cultivado aconteceu em mosteiros.

Of all the stories surrounding the origins of coffee, the most accepted one tells us about a goatherd named Kaldi, who lived in Abyssinia, or Ethiopia, about a millenium ago. He noticed that his goats changed their behavior when thew nibbled on certain leaves and fruits of one of the bushes of the fields. They became happier and active. After trying out the fruit himself, Kaldi decided to share it with the monks in a monastery. First, he infused it and noticed that the resulted drink helped him to fight sleepyness throughout his long hours of reading and praying. The story soon spread and everyone wanted to try out the recipe. According to historical evidence, the first time coffee was purposely prepared was in a monastery.
