The concept behind this project was to create a new community as a studio. Plots of land were divided up for small groups, then were further sub-divided for each individual to design on. The site is situated in Brewer Park, along the banks of the Rideau River. The key unique aspect of this location is that it floods each year. We had to design for the flood and coordinate with one another to ensure the inhabitants would not be stranded by the water.
I designed five dwelling units, perched atop pilotis at the rivers edge, as well as a retail and cafe unit at ground level that act as a barrier to the river during flooding season. As a group we decided that all of the community would be connected by a main pathway [indicated in red] that would be protected from flood waters.
