The Origins of Go-Karting

A managing director with Merrill Lynch in Ithaca, New York., Keefe Gorman provides a range of investments and wealth management services. Outside the professional arena, Keefe Gorman is an avid karting enthusiast.

Also called go-carting or go-karting, this sport originated in the United States roughly 65 years ago when race car fabricator Art Ingels built the very first go-kart in Los Angeles, using spare parts and a 2.5-horsepower lawnmower engine. As a result of this accomplishment, Mr. Ingels is widely regarded as “the father of karting.”

As others began to build karts following Mr. Ingels’ original model, the popularity of karting spread rapidly. Enthusiasts gathered for informal karting events on paved areas before establishing the first official karting race in the parking lot of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. In the wake of this historic 1957 event, kart races began to spread across California and the United States. Expanding beyond asphalt surfaces, many races began taking place on dirt tracks.
