Ekphrasis

For hundreds of years, churches and cathedrals have served as the physical representation of an intangible, yet sustainable source that has guided the lives of millions. As early as the first century, man attempted to capture in material, through these grand works of art, that which only nature could convey: the awe-inspiring power and beauty of creation.

Through Ekphrasis, Luis Fernando encapsulates the spiritual omnipotence of these sacred spaces in one magnificent picture. The structure’s overwhelming majesty, typically lost in a single frame, is recreated here through the mind of an engineer and the eye of an artist, resulting in a photograph---one produced from several hundred images---as emotive as the building itself.

From Plato to Courbet, philosophers and artists have attempted to use words and new forms of art to recapture, exalt, and even surpass the original through the process of ekphrasis. Ekphrasis utilizes the contemporary medium of photography to re-write the three-dimensional spectacle.
