Family Tree is the 1st prize winning entry in the "Wrapping Of Mortality" category in “Design for Death” international competition, which was organized by designboom in collaboration with the LIEN FOUNDATION and ACM FOUNDATION, and supported by the NATIONAL FUNERAL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION (NFDA) 2050 designers from 96 different countries participated. The prototype took part in the biggest world-wide death care exhibition held in Austin, Texas. Project description: Family Tree is about a story of life. It is about our roots which have shaped our worldviews for living today. It is about the family relations and love that we want to share also with the ones who have been long gone. Family Tree takes a pattern of a beehive to create a structure where our genealogical information is carefully stored and represented. The history of each family is unique and so is every Family Tree which is organically shaped over time. Each honeycomb is an urn where the ashes of one family member could be stored. Other shelves give space to display collective memorabilia, place flowers or light a candle. Family Tree is crafted by a family itself. State of the art technology helps to tailor each urn or shelf individually using various materials, textures and colors. Prints, perforations or engravings can be used to create texts, graphic art or photography. The urn cover with an OLED display emits a serene pulsing light and makes it possible to leave a short digital inscription sent from a mobile device. Read Less
