Freedom Day, 25 de Abril

25 DE ABRIL — CARNATION REVOLUTION
Personal animation and illustration I did on the 25th of April 2020, to celebrate the 46th anniversary of "25 de Abril" during quarantine from the global pandemic.

25 de Abril, also known as "Revolução dos Cravos" (Carnation Revolution), was a military coup in Lisbon which overthrew the authoritarian regime on the 25th of April 1974. Its name arose from the fact that no shots were fired, the usage of music as secret signals to move the rebel soldiers, and a florist offered carnations to the soldiers when the population took to the streets to celebrate the end of the dictatorship. Other demonstrators followed suit, and carnations were placed in the muzzles of guns and on the soldiers' uniforms. In Portugal, the 25th of April is a national holiday called "Dia da Liberdade" (Freedom Day) which commemorates the revolution.

In a time when we were all staying at home, uncertain of our future due to the 2020 COVID outbreak, I felt like it was time to celebrate freedom in our "freedom day" with some art inspired by the symbols from the events on the 25th of April 1974.
