Restoring the Roar: Revisited

I did a 'just for fun' project a while back, and recently I was able to revisit it with a little more purpose. This is my second shot at giving the Detroit Lions a new look. Here's the old one.

My designs are inspired by many things, but first and foremost, the overarching idea: Detroit’s motto. ’Speramus Meliora; Resurget Cineribus’ (We Hope For Better Things; It Shall Rise From the Ashes). I can’t think of a better motto for the city, the team, its fans, or the people of Michigan. Sorry if that’s sappy, but how many teams would have this many fans after more than 50 years of losing? As fans, we're constantly hoping for a brighter day for this team, and I think that’s pretty common knowledge around the NFL. The time seems right for a change, with youth and speed finally coming together to form what I think has been the best Lions team we’ve seen in quite some time.

On to the actual uniform. I’ve always wondered why the Lions didn’t (in some capacity) play up the Motor City element. The simple striping that is reminiscent of what we’ve come to expect from this team, but with a modern (in terms of uniform design) twist. Those stripes are heavily inspired by a ’69 Mustang — but it’s not something people expect on a football uniform.  The faux-tough numbers and typeface are replaced by a hefty slab font, which is reminiscent of racing numerals. Gone, too, is the wordmark that matches. Certainly, there are those who think black should be non-existent in the Lions’ identity. I am not one of those  people. If anything, I’d be happy to see it have an increased role, because I love how well it plays with the silver and blue. It really makes the blue pop, and black always pairs well with silver. Sorry if you’re in the ‘ditch the black’ club.
