For Penguin Book's "Famous Couples" collection, I selected Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan from the classic novel The Great Gatsby to base my design. The story takes place in 1920's Long Island, where Art Deco design became very popular. The couple's relationship was very turbulent and based on idealization. To showcase Daisy's love of materialism and 'old money' mentality, I included her signature pearl necklace in the foreground. Gatsby's recognizable car is the focus of my design, with clothes flying out to to resemble his extravagant, false persona he takes on to impress Daisy. While the couple loved each other in the past, the current timing of the story is not right for their relationship. To tie this key factor into my piece, I incorporated a clock tower into the Art Deco design.
