TERRACE HOUSE DESIGN
May 2018

The brief was to redesign the existing terrace house in Leicester. The size of the overall plan and the facade of the building had to remain unchanged, but the rest of the house could be fully rearranged.

The client was a family of three, both parents requested a separate space for the home office, one of them had to provide natural light. The teenage child requested their own en-suite with a walk-in closet.

SITE ANALYSIS

The terrace house is located Fosse Road South in Leicester and it is part of the conservation area, therefore the facade of the building had to stay unchanged. The shape of the site is narrow and long, with the longer sides connected to other buildings, what results in a little light inside the house. The facade with small windows does not help. The rear of the site faces South-East which is the only side of this site to capture some natural light.
Another challenge to this site is the slope of 1500mm from the facade to the back of the site. There was a need for the accommodation of uneven terrain and making the ground floor fully accessible at the same time.

PLANS
The back of the building has been designed to provide maximum amount of light to the space. The ground floor and the first floor are also very open to provide the access of light to the middle of the structure. The entresol adds to the airy feel of the space joining the living room and one of the offices above with the suspended staircase. (look cover photo)
In order to accommodate the slope between front and the back of the site, two flights of stairs has been designed to divide the spaces on the ground floor, the kitchen, the living room, and the garden.
To ensure the accessibility of the main house areas to the mobile impaired visitor, the low rise lift has been installed in the flooring on the bottom of both sets of stairs. (look above)
The house has been designed not only to fit all of the rooms for each family member, but also to provide storage: laundry room, walk-in closet or storage underneath the suspended staircase.
