Carnuntum

I have already visited many Roman excavation sites in Italy and Spain but Carnuntum in today's Austria is extraordinary. No other place shows so vividly and directly how the Romans lived in a civil city. Carnuntum is located between Vienna and Bratislava on the former Limes along the Danube river. At its heyday around 300 AD, about 50,000 people lived in the city. During the 2000s, some buildings were completely reconstructed on the excavated foundation walls according to monument protection and archaeological aspects, exactly as they looked like in Roman times. You can see a complete and functional thermal complex with frigidarium, tepidarium and caldarium, which is heated with the original Roman technology. There is the "villa urbana", a city palace of an upper-class citizen, the "house of Lucius", a middle-class citizen, and the house and store of an olive oil merchant. Furthermore, there is the "domus quarta", a residential house with an original floor mosaic. The murals and furniture have also been reconstructed. So the visitor can go on a unique time travel into the Roman Empire. In addition to the reconstructions of the civilian town, there are remains of two amphitheaters and a gladiator school to visit.
